GAF vs. Owens Corning vs. CertainTeed: Which Shingle for DFW?
A contractor's comparison of the top three asphalt shingle brands for DFW homes — warranty terms, wind ratings, hail performance, and what actually matters for North Texas.

If you're replacing a DFW roof, you'll see the same three brands in most quotes: GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed. They're all major manufacturers with decent products. Here's how they actually differ, and which one is right for your house.
The Fast Summary
- GAF — the market leader. Best warranty network, easiest supplement resolution with insurance. Timberline HDZ is the workhorse DFW shingle.
- Owens Corning — great product, strong colors, SureNail technology. TruDefinition Duration is the most common install we see.
- CertainTeed — most premium feel. Landmark line is solid; the higher tiers (Landmark Pro, Presidential Shake) stand out in design-conscious markets.
All three are reliable. The difference between them is smaller than the difference between a good install and a bad install. Which brings us to…
What Actually Matters (Before the Brand)
The installer matters more than the shingle. A GAF Timberline installed correctly outlasts a Landmark Pro installed by a weekend crew. So once you've picked a quality installer, the brand differences become:
- Warranty structure
- Specific product line (not "Brand X" broadly)
- Color and aesthetic fit
- Wind + hail ratings for your risk profile
Warranty Structure
GAF Golden Pledge Warranty
The most comprehensive warranty on the market — but only from Master Elite certified contractors (top 3% of GAF installers). Covers:
- 50 years on materials
- 25 years on workmanship (yes — a manufacturer-backed workmanship warranty, which is rare)
- Transferable once to a new homeowner
- Requires full GAF system install (starter strips, ridge caps, accessories — all GAF)
Standard GAF warranty without Golden Pledge: 50-year material, 10-year lifetime algorithm — similar to competitors.
Owens Corning Platinum Protection
Requires Platinum Preferred Contractor status. Covers:
- Lifetime material warranty
- 50-year workmanship backing
- Transferable
- Requires full OC system install
Without Platinum: standard lifetime limited warranty on materials only.
CertainTeed 4-Star SureStart PLUS
Requires Select ShingleMaster status. Covers:
- Lifetime material
- 25-year workmanship
- Transferable twice
- Requires full CertainTeed accessories
All three require the installer's highest certification tier. Most DFW roofers are certified by at least one manufacturer — ask which, and request that manufacturer's warranty.
Wind Ratings
| Product | Wind rating | Hail rating |
|---|---|---|
| GAF Timberline HDZ | 130 mph (LayerLock) | Class 3 (impact rated available: Timberline HDZ AS II) |
| Owens Corning Duration | 130 mph (SureNail) | Class 3 (impact rated available: Duration FLEX) |
| CertainTeed Landmark | 110 mph | Class 3 (impact rated: Landmark IR, Landmark Pro) |
| CertainTeed Landmark Pro | 110 mph (130 with extra fasteners) | Class 3 |
For DFW's straight-line winds and occasional tornado cells, 130 mph rating should be the floor. That's GAF Timberline HDZ or OC Duration.
Hail Performance — The DFW Factor
North Texas averages more hail events per year than almost anywhere in the US. Standard Class 3 shingles resist 1.75" hail without functional damage. Class 4 impact-rated shingles resist 2" hail.
Class 4 shingles cost ~15-25% more than standard. Many Texas insurers offer a hail-discount (5-25% off the premium) on homes with Class 4 roofs — often paying back the upcharge in 3-5 years.
If you're in a high-hail zone (Rockwall, east Dallas, Plano east, McKinney), Class 4 is worth considering. If you're in a less-hit zone (Fort Worth west, Flower Mound), standard architectural is usually fine.
Product Lines at a Glance
GAF
- Timberline HDZ — the workhorse. Architectural, mid-tier, 130 mph. Most common DFW install.
- Timberline HDZ Reflector Series — cool-roof coating, can drop attic temps significantly. Worth it for south-facing roofs in direct sun.
- Timberline AS II — impact-rated (Class 4) version.
- Timberline Natural Shadow — entry-level, single-layer. Skip it; go Timberline HDZ.
- Grand Sequoia / Grand Canyon — designer shakes-look, premium.
Owens Corning
- TruDefinition Duration — SureNail tech, 130 mph standard. The OC workhorse.
- Duration FLEX — impact-rated, SBS-modified (more elastic in cold).
- Duration STORM — impact-rated, heavier weight.
- Berkshire Collection — designer slate-look.
- Woodmoor / Woodcrest — designer shake profiles.
CertainTeed
- Landmark — mid-tier, 110 mph standard. Thinner than Timberline HDZ or Duration.
- Landmark Pro — heavier, longer warranty, nicer shadow line.
- Landmark Premium — thicker yet, best Landmark-tier.
- Presidential Shake / Presidential TL — premium shake profile, heaviest in the line.
- Belmont — luxury slate profile.
Color — Where the Aesthetic Decision Happens
All three have broad color palettes. A few DFW-relevant notes:
- Brick homes (common in Plano, Richardson): earth tones win — Weathered Wood (GAF), Driftwood (OC), Moire Black (CertainTeed).
- Tan/beige stone homes (common in Frisco, Prosper new builds): lighter greys work — Pewter Gray, Estate Gray, Max Def Resawn Shake.
- White/black contemporary (common in Prosper, Celina custom builds): true blacks or very dark slate — Oyster Shell doesn't work; Charcoal or Barkwood do.
- Red brick / traditional: stay warm — Hickory, Copper Canyon, Autumn Blend.

What We Recommend (Most DFW Homes)
Standard mid-range DFW home, no specific requirements:
- GAF Timberline HDZ or Owens Corning TruDefinition Duration — functionally equivalent. Pick based on color.
High-hail zone or insurance discount available:
- GAF Timberline HDZ AS II or Owens Corning Duration FLEX (Class 4).
Premium custom home, design-forward HOA:
- CertainTeed Presidential Shake / TL, or GAF Grand Sequoia.
Tight budget, still want quality:
- GAF Timberline HDZ with standard (not Golden Pledge) warranty. Same shingle, shorter warranty coverage, lower cost.
Red Flags in Quotes
- "Unbranded" shingles. Run.
- Quotes that don't specify product line (just "GAF" without HDZ / Natural Shadow / etc.).
- Contractor not certified by the brand they're recommending.
- Warranty that only covers materials without workmanship.
- Installer refusing to list specific accessories (starter strip, ridge cap) on the estimate.
