Stamped vs Broom-Finish Concrete: Picking the Right Patio Finish
Stamped, broom-finish, stained, and exposed aggregate — the four concrete patio finishes you'll actually see in DFW. Costs, durability, and which one fits your yard.

Concrete is the DFW patio default — durable, flexible to shape, and priced below pavers or natural stone. The decision isn't whether to pour concrete, it's which finish. Here are the four options we install and where each one fits.
Broom-Finish
The classic and most common. Fresh concrete gets brushed in one direction to create subtle texture.
Cost: $8–$14 / sq ft installed
Pros:
- Slip-resistant in wet conditions
- Low-cost and fast to install
- Easy to repair / patch (texture is easy to match)
- 25–40 year lifespan with proper sealing
Cons:
- Utilitarian look — reads as a "concrete slab"
- Limited color options beyond gray
Best for: side yards, utility areas, driveways, and patios where function beats aesthetics.
Stamped Concrete
Concrete stamped with textured mats that mimic flagstone, slate, wood plank, brick, or cobblestone. Color integrated into the mix + accent colors applied during stamping.
Cost: $14–$24 / sq ft installed
Pros:
- Can replicate natural stone at 40–60% the cost
- Nearly infinite pattern / color combinations
- Full slab = no grout joints to weed
- Excellent DFW climate performance when sealed properly
Cons:
- Color fades over 8–12 years (restainable, but budget for it)
- Joints crack with slab — slab cracks show through pattern
- Seal maintenance is critical — neglected seal = water intrusion, staining
Best for: main patios, pool decks, walkways where aesthetic matters.
Stained Concrete
Existing concrete (or a freshly-poured smooth finish) gets chemically stained for depth and color variation.
Cost: $4–$10 / sq ft if staining existing concrete; $12–$18 / sq ft new pour + stain
Pros:
- Dramatic color depth — marbled, mottled look
- Works on existing concrete (refresh option)
- Unique look on each slab — no two match
- Excellent for contemporary aesthetic
Cons:
- Staining is unpredictable on damaged or patched existing concrete
- Color shifts with hydration — every day weathering changes tone
- Requires full cure time (28 days) on new pours before staining
Best for: indoor/outdoor transitions, covered patios, modern/contemporary architecture.
Exposed Aggregate
Surface cement is washed away to expose the decorative stones in the mix.
Cost: $12–$20 / sq ft installed
Pros:
- Very slip-resistant
- Natural, organic look
- No color to fade — stones stay the same
- Hides surface wear well
Cons:
- Texture can be rough on bare feet
- Collects debris in the exposed stones
- Slightly dated aesthetic — reads as 80s-90s unless paired with modern architecture
Best for: pool decks where slip resistance is priority, shaded areas.
The Slab Matters More Than The Finish
None of the finishes save a bad slab. Every pour should include:
- 4-inch depth minimum for residential patio (6 inches for driveway/heavy load)
- #3 rebar on 16" centers, or fiber mesh reinforcement
- Compacted sub-base with 4 inches of crushed aggregate
- Control joints cut every 8–12 feet to prevent random cracking
- Proper slope away from the house (1/4 inch per foot)
- Expansion joints at house foundation, slab edges, pool, and any dissimilar surfaces
Skip any of those and the slab cracks at year 2–4 no matter how pretty the finish.
Sealing Schedule
DFW climate is hard on concrete sealers. Realistic reseal schedule:
- Broom finish: Every 4–6 years
- Stamped: Every 2–3 years (first reseal at year 2, then every 3)
- Stained: Every 2–3 years
- Exposed aggregate: Every 4–5 years
Skipping sealer is the #1 reason DFW patios look 15 years old at year 7.
Combining Finishes
Our favorite DFW patio look mixes finishes:
- Main patio: stamped flagstone or ashlar slate
- Walkway borders: broom-finish bands for contrast
- Stepping stones through turf: separate stained concrete pads
Mixed finishes read custom and break up a large concrete area that would otherwise feel monotonous.
